In the Community
At BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, we value the communities where we work and live — and we provide value through our corporate giving.
We believe in the health and wellness of all South Carolinians. Through corporate contributions, sponsorships and employee giving campaigns, we create partnerships with nonprofit organizations to help strengthen and grow our community. We listen to their needs as nonprofit experts and work to get resources to those who need it most.
Corporate Citizenship
The goal of our corporate giving program is to improve quality of life for all South Carolinians by creating a well-rounded community, improving health outcomes and increasing access to basic needs.
Throughout our history, BlueCross has supported thousands of nonprofit organizations. While we mainly support health and human services organizations, we believe a strong community is multi-faceted. By also contributing to the arts, education, economic development, civic engagement, and other causes and issues that impact our state, we work to create a vibrant, diverse community.
Employee Engagement
BlueCross employees have given over $40 million and countless volunteer hours in support of their communities since 2005, when we began tracking this data.
In 2021, nearly 7,800 BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina employees logged 18,825 volunteer hours to support established nonprofits, which translates into $537,265 in monetary value according to Independent Sector, a national membership organization that tracks volunteerism.

Day of Service
BlueCross hosted its second annual Day of Service on April 23, 2022, after a two-year hiatus caused by the pandemic. Employees spent their Saturday volunteering at 14 different nonprofits across the state, helping sort food for Harvest Hope Food Bank, building a wheelchair ramp with Home Works of America, beautifying areas around Columbia with Keeping the Midlands Beautiful and Serve and Connect, and lending a helping hand with community events hosted by the National MS Society, Governors Cup, Historic Columbia and others. Employees are looking forward to volunteering during the next Day of Service on April 22, 2023. Learn more about Day of Service on our blog.
The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation
The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation was established in 2003 and works to tackle complex health care challenges by connecting innovative community partners with grants that improve health outcomes for South Carolinians, particularly the economically vulnerable.
The Foundation awards funding through a separate process from the corporate giving department, and projects must meet specific qualifications to receive a grant. Any eligible organization interested in applying for a grant must submit a letter of intent first.
To learn more about the Foundation’s work or how to apply for funding, visit the Foundation's website.
The BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association.
Midlands Gives
Each year, BlueCross and its employees support Midlands Gives, an 18-hour giving challenge hosted by Central Carolina Community Foundation. The event brings the region together as one community, raising money and awareness for 546 local nonprofits in 11 Midlands counties.
During the 2022 event, BlueCross employees donated $41,450 to 186 nonprofit organizations. Since 2020, BlueCross employees have donated more than $115,000 during Midlands Gives, making BlueCross the top employer among companies participating.
